History and architecture

The church tower is part of the Amönau coat of arms

The strong Romanesque west tower with a late medieval pointed helmet and four wich houses was built around 1200. In earlier times it served as a defense tower. Remains of an earlier vault have been preserved on the ground floor. The essentially Romanesque nave was extended around 1300 to include an early Gothic , three-sided, closed and formerly vaulted choir . The church was remodeled around 1749. Around 1790 the windows and probably also the vaults were changed. The building stands on a former cemetery, the walls of which have been partially preserved; the area is bordered by the castle enclosure to the north and east.

Furnishing

Some epitaphs from the 16th and 17th centuries are on display. Noteworthy here are a tombstone with pictures of two children from Rehen who died in 1595 and 1596 and a tombstone with inscriptions for pastor Heinrich Hennemann, who died in 1699. The epitaph for the knight Eitel Löwenstein von Rehen, who died in 1578, is preserved on the northern outer wall. The font probably dates from the 15th century. The pulpit is designed in a classical style. The organ prospectus is a work from around 1800; it was later changed, possibly by AH Dickel. The crucifix is a work from the beginning of the 18th century.
