Tower of the Protestant town church

The Evangelical City Church in Ratingen is the oldest reformed church building in the former Duchy of Berg . The baroque church was built between 1668 and 1687 and the west tower was added in 1856.

history

Since 1565, the first Reformed Christians attended church services in neighboring Kettwig and Homberg or gathered in their private apartments. The Brandenburg councilor Werner Lucas Blaspiell gave the Reformed parish a piece of land to build a church. Construction began in 1668, and in 1687 the church was poorly completed.

The current tower was only built in 1856. The church was renovated in 1966.

In 1817 the Reformed and Lutheran parishes were united .

The parish is divided into four districts and includes 13,757 parishioners (as of 2014).

architecture

The roughly east-facing hall church with a straight end has a gable roof and is illuminated through large arched windows. Two colored stained glass windows are let into the east . A small sacristy is built on the south-east corner , which is accessible through a round-arched door in the south-east wall.

The three floors of the drawn-in brick west tower spring back slightly upwards. The two basement floors have corner pilasters that merge into round arch friezes , a round arch twin window each on the west side and a round window on the second floor, and on the ground floor a southern and a northern arched window. The bell storey has a dial for the tower clock on each side above the two arched sound holes . An eight-sided pointed helmet rises above the tower cross, which is crowned by an angel blowing a trumpet instead of the usual weathercock. The ground floor of the tower serves as the main entrance. The round arched west portal has a semicircular window at the top. On the long sides, rectangular side portals open up the interior of the church.

Furnishing

The interior is closed off by a wooden barrel vault supported by free-standing eight-sided pillars, giving the impression of a three-aisled complex. The baroque interior has not been preserved, it was replaced in 1966 by simple modern furnishings. The west gallery serves as the installation site for the organ . Diagonal galleries extend beyond the first arched window.

The pulpit stands in the middle in front of the east windows, in front of it the Lord's Supper table , on the left the lectern, on the right the baptismal font . The church stalls extend on the long sides to the pillars. The large middle seat block is accessible from two sides.

organ

In the gallery is the organ in an artfully carved oak case, which was created by Thomas Weidtman for another church in 1736 and taken over for the new organ in Ratingen. The baroque prospectus is divided into five axes. The back positive in the gallery parapet is the reduction in size of the main work. The main structure has an elevated central round tower and two corner towers on the outside, with two-story flat fields in between, while the central tower of the Rückpositiv is angular and is flanked by two round towers. The case is decorated with elaborate carving. As part of the interior renovation in 1966, the Schuke organ building workshop built a new organ. The instrument has 25 registers , which are divided between two manuals and a pedal . The key actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electrical. The disposition is as follows:
