Evelyn Sharp, Baroness Sharp
Evelyn Adelaide Sharp, Baroness Sharp GBE (born May 25, 1903 in Hornsey ; † September 1, 1985 in Bury St Edmunds , Suffolk ) was a British civil servant and politician who became the first woman permanent secretary in 1955 and thus the highest administrative officer in a ministry as well 1966 when Life Peer became a member of the House of Lords under the Life Peerages Act 1958 .
Life
Rise to the first female permanent secretary
Evelyn Sharp began after the visit of St Paul's Girls' School in Brook Green in 1922 a degree in historical sciences at Somerville College of the University of Oxford , where she graduated 1926th She then began her professional career as an administrative officer in the public service and initially worked in the Ministry of Trade ( Board of Trade ) and then in the Ministry of Health . In the following years she dealt mainly with issues of local government and was during the Second World War to the Treasury ( HM Treasury seconded).
Shortly before the end of the war, she became Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Town and Country Planning, and took on this role after the Ministry of Housing and Local Government was established in January 1951. For her services she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1948.
In 1955 she was finally Permanent Secretary ( Permanent Secretary ) in the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and became thus the first woman in the history of Britain this function as chief administrative officer in a ministry. In 1961 she was raised to the Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire. She held the position of permanent secretary until she retired in 1966, with Richard Crossman , Minister in office from 1964 to 1966, describing his experiences and experiences of their collaboration in his autobiography Diaries of a Cabinet Minister (1979).
House of Lords
After leaving the ministerial service, Evelyn Sharp was raised to the nobility by a letters patent dated September 19, 1966 under the Life Peerages Act 1958 as a Life Peeress with the title Baroness Sharp , of Hornsey in Greater London . Their introduction ( Introduction ) into the House of Lords took place on October 26, 1966 by Edward Bridges, 1st Baron Bridges and Norman Brook, 1st Baron Normanbrook . She was a member of the House of Lords until her death. In the upper house she joined the Crossbencher , the group of non-party members of the upper house.
Most recently, Baroness Sharp was also President of the London & Quadrant Housing Trust from 1977 until her death .
