Everything in This Country Must is a 2004 American short film directed by Gary McKendry .

action

In 1985 in Northern Ireland : British soldiers rammed a car in their tank because they were joking around and not paying attention to the road. The driver and her son are killed. The judge classifies the accident as a simple misfortune for which nobody is to blame. This leaves Katie's father, who has lost his wife and son, in terrible helplessness.

Two years later: The creek not far from Katie and her father's property has swollen as a result of heavy rainfall. Her horse, once Katie's brother's favorite horse, gets stuck in the water with a hoof and cannot free itself. When Katie and her father try to free the horse, a tank appears with British soldiers, including Stevie, who was there in the fatal accident at the time. The soldiers save the horse, even if the father clearly shows his dislike for the men. When Katie later hands the men warm drinks and biscuits, the father reacts angrily until one of the soldiers says indignantly that the horse has been saved. Meanwhile, Stevie saw a photo of his wife and son and realized that a rescued horse is nothing compared to the loss of a wife and child. He can prevent an escalation and the soldiers leave. Stevie returns one more time and apologizes to the father. Shortly afterwards he lingers in front of the picture that Stevie had also looked at. He goes into the stable and shoots the horse. Katie, who joins them, is sent back to the house by him. She notices that the sky is too small for all the rain ("Oh what a small sky for so much rain.").
