Ewald Theodor von Scheffer (born May 9, 1812 in Fischhausen , † January 25, 1898 in Nöschenrode , in the Wernigerode district ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

His parents were Christian Carl Ludwig von Scheffer (* 1754; † December 18, 1815) and his wife Helene Lisette, née von Wienckowski. His father was a captain a. D. and finally in the garrison battalion of the 1st Infantry Regiment .

Career

He came to Kulm as a cadet on February 1, 1824, where he was made private on September 5, 1825. He then went to Berlin as a cadet on March 31, 1826 . From there he came to the 3rd Infantry Regiment on July 19, 1829 as Portepeefähnrich and on February 19, 1831 as a Second Lieutenant in the 37th Infantry Regiment. In 1834 he was posted to the Infantry Training Battalion and posted to the General War School from October 1, 1836 to June 30, 1839 . On March 30, 1839, he was posted to the cadet institute in Kulm for one year, and on November 12, 1840, his command was extended for another year. On May 8, 1841, he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant in Kulm. On March 31, 1846 he was transferred to the 4th Infantry Regiment, on June 1, 1857 he was transferred from there to the 1st Combined Reserve Battalion. On May 13, 1848 he was transferred back to the 4th Infantry Regiment as a captain and company commander. Promoted to major on May 9, 1854, he was reassigned to the 1st Combined Reserve Battalion as commander on January 15, 1856, and back on February 7, 1857. On May 15, 1858 he was transferred to the 4th Landwehr Regiment, where he was commander of the III. Battalion in Graudenz . There he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on May 31, 1859, and on June 14, 1859, he was transferred to the mobile 5th Landwehr Infantry Regiment as commander. The following year he was appointed leader of the 5th Combined Infantry Regiment on May 8, 1860, but was transferred to the 45th Infantry Regiment as commander on July 1, 1860. From there he came on July 24, 1861 as a commander in the grenadier regiment No. 3. There he was appointed colonel on October 18, 1861 and on January 18, 1863 was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 3rd class with ribbon . He got his departure on August 14, 1865 with the character of major general and a pension. On September 12, 1865, he was put up for disposal with a pension .

During the mobilization for the German war , he became deputy commander of the 6th Infantry Brigade on May 18, 1866.

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War , he was appointed deputy commander of the 7th Infantry Brigade on July 18, 1870, and released from this position on August 15, 1871. For this he was awarded the Crown Order 2nd Class on January 18, 1872 . He died on January 25, 1898 in Nöschenrode (Wernigerode district).

In 1847 his battalion commander wrote in his assessment: Although he has only been here with the battalion for a few months, the battalion has already given evidence through prudence and service knowledge as well as through activity, zeal and energy that he is not alienating the practical service, but rather his position has grown completely. The same appears to shine in scientific education, in a lively sense of spiritual development and in an honorable moral disposition.

He married on July 4, 1841 in Kulm Klara Hedwig Ernestine von Woyna (* October 23, 1822, † April 5, 1900), the daughter of General Johann Wilhelm von Woyna . The couple had at least two daughters:
