Exence is an Italian progressive thrash and death metal band from Florence , which was founded in 2000 under the name Essence , split up in 2009 and has been active again since 2011.
history
The band was founded in 2000 under the name Essence by the singer Massimiliano "Max" Pasciuto, the drummer Francesco Brizzi and the bassist Matteo Meucci. The guitarist Federico "Pule" Puleri joined as a further member. After a few months, a first demo was recorded under the name Ferocity . In 2002 Meucci left the line-up, whereupon bassist Mirko Serra and guitarist Emanuele Righi joined. This was followed by appearances in Tuscany , among others together with bands like Node and Coram Lethe . In 2004 and 2005 the demo Dynamics was recorded in the Head Studio and then mastered in the Zenith Studios . In 2006 Righi left the group to devote himself to his own project. At the same time, the drummer Brizzi returned to the group after a one-year break. After 16 months of work, the band finished work on their debut album in 2008. The recordings had taken place in the Italian Head Studio before the album was mixed in the Swedish Not Quiet Studios .
After the band changed their name to Exence in 2008, the album entitled Hystrionic was released in 2009 on Punishment 18 Records . After a tour with Cynic and Darkane , the members split. Two years later, Puleri revived the band. The line-up was supplemented by the singer Riccardo De Simone aka Ritchie Bleed, the guitarist Riccardo Tortoli, the bassist Dario Lastrucci and the drummer Francesco "Breeze" Brizzi. In the same year the next album was produced in the 16th Cellar Studios in Rome under the direction of Stefano Morabito . In 2013 it was released on Punishment 18 Records under the name Tabula Rasa .
style
Reini from stormbringer.at wrote in his review of Hystrionic that it contained a progressive mixture of Thrash and Death Metal. The group itself would often cite Death and Pantera as their influences. In terms of sound, the songs hardly have anything to do with Pantera, but more to do with Death. Because of the "high chant" used in the songs, he also felt reminded of Sadus , which could put off fans of classic Progressive Metal. Main songwriter Puleri uses a multitude of riffs in the song structure , which makes it difficult to process the songs as a listener. Cameron Ervin from metal-temple.com wrote that Tabula Rasa was so captivating , especially because of the syncopation and groovy riffs in the songs . The singing sounds one-dimensional and shrill and is reminiscent of Meshuggah's . Occasionally the songs use rhythms that are reminiscent of Djent , and riffs that are typical of progressive metal are also used. The arrangements of the guitar riffs are particularly characteristic , with solos rarely occurring. The bass sounds groovy, but is not always audible.
