Company history

Extra EA-300SHP
Walter Extra

The company dates back to Walter Extra, a successful German stunt pilot and aircraft designer, the multiple German champion in aerobatics was. In the 1980s, he decided to design and build his own aircraft for the first time.

His aircraft designs revolutionized the aerobatics scene and at times dominated competitions around the world. For example, Klaus Schrodt won his world championship title on extra aircraft.

Problems arose in the company during the development and construction of the Extra 500, which was then taken over by American investors in August 2003. The new management team is headed by Ken Keith.

In August 2009 five of the top ten pilots flew Extra Airplanes at the World Championship. In 2013-2019, Extra aircraft won the Advanced Aerobatic World Championship.

The range of machines designed by Walter Extra and built in his company Extra Aircraft at Dinslaken / Schwarze Heide airfield near Dinslaken includes:

Aerobatic aircraft

  • Extra 200 (also Extra 300/200) - aerobatic trainer variant of the Extra 300L with a 200 hp engine as the successor to the 230, whose production had to be discontinued due to the lack of suitable wood for the wing construction. The Extra 200, equipped with wings made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and tubular steel fuselage, has been in production again since 2005. Like the Extra 300L, it is approved for load multiples of ± 10 g .
  • Extra 230 - the first design from Walter Extra. This machine was still made of quite conventional materials; the wings made of a wooden construction, the fuselage made of tubular steel, the whole thing was then covered with plastic. The engine developed 200 hp.
  • Extra 260 - a forerunner version of the Extra 300 with a 260 hp machine, only six.
  • Extra 300 - with an engine output of 300 hp and a middle-decker made largely of plastic.
  • Extra 300 L - low-wing version of the Extra 300.
  • Extra 330 - variant of the Extra 300, wings and many other components made of high-strength CFRP. With an engine output of 330 hp, Extra's most powerful aerobatic machine to date.
  • Extra 330 SC - single-seat aerobatic plane with a low wing
  • Extra 330 LX - two-part low-wing aerobatic plane with tandem arrangement
  • Extra 330 LE - electrified version of the Extra 330 with a 260 kW motor from Siemens and two battery packs, each with a capacity of 18.6 kWh from Pipistrel .

There are still different variants of these types, for example two-seater versions.

The aircraft from Extra Aerobatic Planes promise high performance and good handling.

Touring planes

  • Extra 400 - six-seater touring machine with 350 HP piston engine.
  • Extra 500 - six-seater touring machine with 450 HP turboprop engine, greater range than the Extra 400.
