The Extra EA-400 is a single-engine airplane travel and business of the German company Extra Aircraft that the airfield Schwarze Heide Dinslaken / is based. It represents the forerunner of the Extra EA-500 propeller turbine version . According to the manufacturer, 29 machines are currently in use. However, production was discontinued in favor of the EA-500.
General
Extra 400 is a single-engine travel and business jet aircraft that is designed as a high-wing aircraft . The tail unit is designed in a T-shape. It has a hydraulic retractable landing gear from Gomolzig and a pressurized cabin with space for up to 6 passengers (including the pilot). The hull is made of composite materials. The shelf life is 25 years or 20,000 hours. The Extra 400 was produced by Extra Flugzeugproduktions- und Vertriebs GmbH based at the Dinslaken / Schwarze Heide airfield .
development
The development of the machine made of composite materials with a pressurized cabin and glass cockpit started in 1992 and was announced in February 1993. It took place in collaboration with the Technical University of Delft . The first flight took place on April 23, 1996. This first prototype was used until 1997. The second prototype (D-EGBU) first flew in April 1998, but crashed on August 21, 1998 on its delivery flight. The FAA -approved was issued April 15, 1998th
drive
The Extra 400 is powered by a liquid-cooled six - cylinder boxer engine Teledyne Continental TSIOL 550-C with 261 kW (350 PS). The constant speed propeller is an MT propeller MTV-14-D / 195-30a with four blades and a diameter of 1.95 m. Alternatively, a 3-sheet version could also be supplied. The tank holds 680 liters. According to the manufacturer, there was an agreement with the engine supplier Continental about the delivery of a more powerful engine with 375 hp. However, Continental did not keep this promise and so the Extra 400 is considered to be underpowered. Only the switch to a turboprop engine from Rolls-Royce with the Extra EA-500 was able to deliver adequate power with 450 hp.

particularities
The Extra 400 is approved in Germany as a so-called echo class , i. H. Due to its maximum take-off mass (≤ 2 t) and the fact that it is single-engine, its German registration always begins with DE. Nevertheless, it may not be flown with the otherwise usual class rating for single-engine aircraft up to 5.7 t plus differential training for controllable pitch propellers and retractable landing gear, but the pilot needs a type rating for the Extra 400. The Federal Aviation Office thus followed the recommendation of the BFU from the accident report about the crash of the Extra 400 in Hagen.
