Eye in the Sky is the sixth studio album by the British progressive rock band The Alan Parsons Project , which was released in June 1982. It is primarily concerned with the assumption that you are under constant observation. In addition, the concept of the album deals with beliefs, regardless of whether they are religiously, politically or personally (e.g. gambling) motivated. The personal aspect refers to the previous album " The Turn of a Friendly Card " (1980), while musically its predecessor " Pyramid " (1978) is quoted.

"Eye in the Sky", together with " Ammonia Avenue " (1984), is considered to be the formation's most commercially successful album. It reached the top of the sales lists in Germany and Austria and number 7 in the US charts. Eye in the Sky contains the band's greatest success with the title track . It reached number 3 on the US Billboard charts and number 6 in Canada. The album also includes the well-known instrumental piece Sirius , which is extremely popular at sporting events around the world and has a melody often associated with the band.

Album title and origin

"Eye in the sky" generally stands for surveillance cameras , both in casinos and in military facilities. The term is also a novel by Philip K. Dick (German title: “And the earth stands still”), but is used in this as a metaphor for God from the point of view of a religious fanatic.

According to a statement by Eric Woolfson, the album title came about after he was confronted with the term three times in different contexts within one day. An acquaintance showed him the surveillance cameras in the Tropicana Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas , after which he followed reports on a spy satellite in his hotel room and finally as the name of an observation helicopter belonging to the weather service.

The recordings for "Eye in the Sky" took place at the end of 1981 / beginning of 1982 with analog multitrack machines in the Abbey Road Studios. The digital master tape was mixed using a Sony PCM 1610 audio processor.

The cover was designed by the British design studio Hipgnosis and shows the image of the eye of Horus (Egyptian hieroglyph), which is embossed during early pressing of the long-playing record and coated with gold-like foil.
