Ezzatollah Negahban

Ezzatollah Negahban ( listen ? / I PersianAudio file / audio sample عزت‌الله نگهبان[ ɛzzætollɑh ɛ nɛgæhbɑn ]; * March 1, 1926 in Ahvaz ; † February 2, 2009 near Orlando , Florida , United States ) was an Iranian archaeologist known as the father of modern Iranian archeology .

biography

After graduating from Firuz Bahram High School, Negahban began his studies in archeology at the University of Tehran , where he obtained his bachelor's degree after four years . He received his Masters at the University of Chicago in 1954 after writing his dissertation with Donald McCown. He was appointed associate professor in 1955 and full professor in 1962 in the archeology department of Tehran University. He founded the Iranian Archaeological Institute of this university, of which he was technical director from 1960 to 1965. From 1967 to 1978 Nehagban was the head of the archeology department of the university; In 1975 he became dean of the Faculty of Arts, a post he held until 1979. At the same time he worked from 1965 to 1979 as a technical advisor to the Ministry of Culture. In 1980 he began his work as curator of the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania , which continued until 2000 . He led the excavations of numerous archaeological sites, such as the Marlik burial ground near Rudbar , Haft Tepe near Susa and Ahvaz .
