The fan-leaved lady's slipper ( Cypripedium japonicum ) is a species of the genus Cypripedium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae).

features

The fan-leaved lady's slipper is a perennial plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 25 to 45 centimeters. The upright stem is hairy brown. The leaves are fan-shaped, almost opposite, sit above the center of the stem and measure 8 to 16 × 7 to 23 centimeters. The radiating nerves end at the leaf ends. The flower stalk and stem are also hairy tomentose. A single bloom is formed. The outer and inner tepals are light yellow or greenish yellow. The lip is L-shaped in side view, its color is yellowish pink to white with darker, reddish spots. The capsule fruit is roughly spindle-shaped.

Flowering time is from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20

Occurrence

The fan-leaved lady's slipper occurs in Japan, Korea, and east to central China in bamboo groves and mountain forests, often near water, at altitudes of 1000 to 2000 meters.

The fan-leaved lady's slipper is rarely used as an ornamental plant for the edges of trees. It has been in culture since 1874 at the latest.
