The Faroese handball championship has been held in the Faroe Islands since 1943. While there was no interruption in handball league operations for women , no champions were played out for men in 1946 and 1947. In addition to the championship, a cup competition has been held since 1985 and 1987 respectively .
Women
The women wore the championship until 2004 in the 1st deild kvinnur ( German 1st league of women ), from 2005 the first league was called Sunsetkappingin due to sponsorship , in 2013/14 Elektron deildin and from 2014 to 2018 hvonn deildin . The SMS-deildin has been playing since the 2018/19 season . With a few exceptions, Neistin dominated the league up to and including 1997, the next championships only followed again in 2011 and 2012. Neistin also holds the record for most championships in a row. From 1982 to 1990 these were won nine times in a row. The championship is held from September to April. In the league, seven teams play against each other three times. After the league games are over, the first and second placed will meet in best-of-three mode, with the winner being the Faroese champions. In the EHF ranking list , the Faroe Islands are ranked 41st for the 2019/20 season with 0.14 points, which means that one participant would be eligible for the EHF Cup and three participants for the EHF Challenge Cup . In 2016/17 Neistin Tórshavn took part in the EHF Cup.
