EHF ranking
The EHF ranking is drawn up by the European Handball Federation (EHF). It shows how strong the club teams of the member states are or how strong the league is. In handball it is the equivalent of the UEFA five-year rating in football.
calculation
- 2 points for a win
- 1 point for a tie
- no points for defeat
- 1 bonus point for every team that reaches the first group stage of the EHF Champions League
- 1 bonus point for each team that reaches the quarter-finals or the main round in the Champions League, semi-finals or finals in one of the four European Cup competitions ( EHF Champions League , EHF Cup , European Cup Winners' Cup , EHF Challenge Cup )
- Points achieved in the Challenge Cup or in qualifying rounds are halved
The total points of a country are added up and the sum of the points from the three years under consideration is divided by the number of competitions in which the country concerned had representatives. (Example Germany: 3 × Champions League, EHF Cup and Cup winners' Cup = divisor 9. Countries from which clubs regularly take part in all four competitions usually have the divisor 12 etc.).
In each season, the current ranking serves as a qualification slide for the following European Cup season. The three previous years are always included in the evaluation for the calculation of the current ranking. That is, z. For example, the results of the 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons are taken into account for the ranking list valid in the 2009/10 season. At the end of the 2009/10 season, the teams from the individual national associations will qualify for the 2010/11 European Cup on this basis.
Importance for the European Cup places
The defending champions from the EHF-Pokal and EHF Challenge Cup have no influence on the nations ranking. Each nation is guaranteed a starting place in the European Cup Winners' Cup and in the EHF Cup.
The two first-placed nations in the EHF ranking will receive:
- 2 starting places in the Champions League
- 3 starting places in the EHF Cup
- 0 starting places in the Challenge Cup
The placements 3–7 receive:
- 1 starting places in the Champions League
- 3 starting places in the EHF Cup
- 0 starting places in the Challenge Cup
The placements 8–13 received:
- 1 starting place in the Champions League
- 2 starting place in the EHF-Cup
- 1 starting place in the Challenge Cup
The placements 14–27 received:
- 1 starting places in the Champions League
- 1 starting place in the EHF Cup
- 2 starting places in the Challenge Cup
All nations from 28th place receive:
- 0 starting places in the Champions League
- 1 starting place in the EHF Cup
- 3 starting places in the Challenge Cup
Special feature of the EHF Champions League
Since the 2009/10 season, four clubs have been invited to a qualifying tournament for the EHF Champions League. These clubs are selected according to the strength of the league in order to raise the level of the Champions League. Four more starting places will be created for the participants in qualifying for the Champions League. These clubs are actually qualified for the EHF Cup, but this gives them a chance to qualify for the Champions League group stage. The fourth place in the 1st Bundesliga will not compete in the EHF Cup, but will have the opportunity to qualify for the EHF Champions League group phase in the qualifying tournament.

special cases
A special regulation applies to Montenegro, whose association broke away from the previously joint association with Serbia in 2006. The previous joint starting place in the Champions League has been given to Serbia since the 2006/2007 season (place 21 in the ranking). Montenegro (27th place) can only get a place in the Champions League in 2009 (after three independent seasons in the European Cup) via the ranking list. Instead, Montenegro gets an additional place in the EHF Cup.
Since the 2006/2007 season, Kosovo has been taking part in the European Cup with its own association. He was granted a starting place in the EHF Cup, Cup Winners Cup and Challenge Cup. Kosovo is the only association that does not receive at least five European Cup places. After two years, the Kosovar teams have already 'lifted' their association to 39th place in the ranking.
Israel , although geographically located in Asia, is, as in almost all other sports, including handball, for political reasons a member of the European Continental Federation and thus also takes part in the EHF competitions.
Up until 2012, England and Scotland each had their own national associations that participated in European Cup competitions. There are national teams in England and Scotland. They have been running together as Great Britain since 2012 . However, handball is still in development and the first division teams have only been involved in EHF Cup and Challenge Cup competitions so far. As a national team, the guaranteed participation in the 2012 Olympic Games in London as the host country provided an opportunity for international comparison.
