The handball department of FC Bayern Munich is one of eight subsidiary departments of the soccer club FC Bayern Munich . It was founded in 1945. In the 1950s, the men's team played at association level in what was then the highest German division, while the women's team belonged to the Bundesliga in the 1970s.

history

After the end of the Second World War , it was the three former handball players of the gymnastics club, Jahn Munich , Otto Würth, Erwin Kienzl and Rudolf Vincenc, who suggested the establishment of a field handball department on the provisional board of directors of FC Bayern. The founding meeting took place in August 1945; Erwin Kienzl became the first department head. Initially, a place on Bogenhausener Zaubzerstraße served as a training facility .

The department was very popular. At the end of 1946 it already had over 50 members and provided three men's teams and one youth team. The 1st men's team played in the southern Bavarian league, the top division at the time. With national player Markus Bernhard in its ranks, the club was able to establish itself in the top division. With fifth place in indoor handball at the German championship in 1955 , FC Bayern achieved their greatest success to date.

The early successes of the men were followed by that of the women in the 1970s, the women's team was a founding member of the women's Bundesliga in 1975 , but suffered relegation in the 1980/81 season . During this time, the coach Kurt Lederer achieved fourth place in the Bundesliga as the club's greatest success in the 1977/78 season .

The first men's team played in the Oberbayern district league (6th division) in 2019/20, the second men's team in the district league, and the third men's team in the district class (as of the 2019/20 season). The first women's team played in the district league. The youth department participated in the 2019/20 season with 12 teams.
