The FC Libertas Wien ( lat. Freedom ) was an Austrian football club from Ottakring , a district of Vienna . From 1932 to 1937 he played in the I. League for a total of five seasons and achieved fifth place as the best place in 1935.

history

Libertas was founded in 1914 by some high school students from the Grätzl around the Ottakringer Brunnenmarkt . Among them were Josef Gerö , later ÖFB president, UEFA vice-president and minister of justice, and also Karl Zankl , later WFV president. The quickly enthusiastic students chose green and white as the colors of their club and soon joined FUAN . After this rival association to the ÖFV disbanded during the First World War, Libertas finally took part in the "real championship" from 1918. The club had a shadowy existence in the lower leagues of Vienna for several years. A brief merger in 1922 with the Josefstädter Sportfreunde broke up, until 1928 the club did not get beyond the third class . Nevertheless, during this time the club produced two internationally very successful players, Josef Horejs and Walter Nausch , who won the Mitropa Cup with Sparta Prague and FK Austria Vienna .

In 1927 the club merged with the second-class SC International Vienna to form International-Libertas . The second-rate club only appeared as FC Libertas Wien from the following season 1928/29 . If the club already reached fifth place in the second division at that time, they were able to receive the second division championship in 1931/32 thanks to an outstanding striker performance by Julius Pfau and move up to the first division. The first game in the top Austrian league took place in front of 16,000 spectators on August 27, 1932 against Rapid and ended 0-0 - four years earlier they had to take a 0-14 debacle against the Hütteldorfer in the ÖFB Cup . The first win against the WAC should already be achieved in the next round . Nevertheless, Libertas played the first few years against relegation, was penultimate in both 1932/33 and 1933/34 . Since the Libertas sports field turned out to be too small for the I. League, the club was first subtenant on Dornbacher Sport-Club-Platz and later on Wacker 's Schönbrunner Platz in Rosasgasse.

The Ottakringer district club was also able to gain international renown. The Luxembourg Easter tournament was won in the final against FC Basel in 1932 and against Fortuna Düsseldorf in the 1933 final . The 1934/35 season developed into the undoubted high point of the club's history, with the club finishing fifth behind Rapid, Vienna , Admira and Wacker. With Ludwig Brousek , Josef Lebeda and Rudolf Schlauf , Libertas had three national players in an international match against Poland these days . Soon, however, the relegation battle set in Ottakring, in 1936 only tenth of twelve, but in the ÖFB Cup , the club was able to advance to the semi-finals. After victories over the Lower Austrian clubs SC Rapid Oberlaa and Germania Schwechat , Libertas made it into the last four with a 3-2 win over SK Sturm Graz . In the semifinals, the runner-up Vienna ultimately had to bow 1: 3.

In 1937, when the league was reduced to ten clubs, the club was third from bottom in the second division, which at that time inherited the name I. League. The outbreak of the Second World War meant that the Libertas, although they achieved quite good results in the second division championship, merged with the district rivals SC Red Star Vienna in 1941 in order to be able to guarantee another game operation. In the season prior to the merger, the two teams had the second and third place in the second-rate first-class Vienna A ingested. This ended the story of the so far only Ottakring first division club, as there was no reactivation after the end of the war.
