The FFH area Fehrenholz is a NATURA 2000 protected area in Schleswig-Holstein in the Schleswig Flensburg district on the northern edge of the Hasselberg community to the Kronsgaard community . It has an area of 19 ha and consists entirely of deciduous forest . The greatest extent is in a north-westerly direction at 0.75 km, the highest elevation is 9.1 m above sea level. It is traversed by a central stream in a south-easterly direction, into which several smaller streams flow. It has 15 small standing water bodies, some of which are connected to one another by the streams. The area is privately owned.
FFH area history and nature conservation area
The NATURA 2000 standard data sheet for the FFH area Fehrenholz was created in June 2004 by the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas (LLUR) of the State of Schleswig-Holstein, in September 2004 by the nature conservation authority of the EU as an area of community importance (GGB ) proposed, confirmed by the EU as GGB in November 2007 and confirmed nationally as a special conservation area (BEG) in January 2010 in accordance with § 32 Paragraph 2 to 4 BNatSchG in conjunction with § 23 LNatSchG. On October 12, 2015, the management plan for the FFH area Fehrenholz was published by the then Ministry for Energy Transition, Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. This is updated continuously.
The FFH area lies entirely in the landscape protection area (LSG) Flensburg Fjord and a main axis of the state-wide biotope network. There are also several legally protected small biotopes in the FFH area. All NATURA 2000 areas in the Schleswig region are subject to the prohibition of deterioration.
Fehrenholz is particularly known for its variety of plants. The proven high number of primroses and lungwort should be emphasized .
FFH conservation object
Two habitat types were reported to the EU environmental authority as conservation objects. They take up 96.3% of the area. Both receive grade C in the overall assessment:
- 9130 Woodruff beech forest
- 9160 Chickweed-oak-hornbeam forests
FFH conservation objectives
The two FFH conservation objects have also been declared FFH conservation objectives for this area.
- 9130 Woodruff beech forest
- 9160 Chickweed-oak-hornbeam forests
FFH analysis and assessment
In the analysis and evaluation, the extensive use of the tree population through individual removal is to be assessed positively as an influence on the conservation goals. However, it cannot be ruled out that contractors with tree harvesting machines can negatively influence the soil structure through compaction. A natural rejuvenation of the forest is not to be expected due to the high population of hoofed game and thus game browsing. The old wood stock is too small for a natural forest. A better evaluation in terms of maintenance or even further development is therefore not possible in the short term.
FFH catalog of measures
A catalog of measures was created in the management plan from the analysis and evaluation. As a working paper and for easier traceability, the measures were recorded in tabular form in measures sheets and a map. The focus is on maintaining the renunciation of intensive use of wood, clearing rivers and planting non-local tree species.
FFH success control and monitoring of the measures
Monitoring takes place in Schleswig-Holstein every 6 years. As a development measure, the replacement of old piping in the flowing waters that cross the paths with elevated paths with open transverse channels was proposed. As of July 20, 2020, the latter measure has not yet been implemented. As a result, the paths at these points are softened after heavy rain and sometimes impassable, see picture gallery.
