The HGm 4/4 is a diesel-electric locomotive type of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn . In 1967 the two machines were put into service by the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn (FO) in order to be able to decommission the last steam locomotives as a reserve independent of the contact wire . An important area of application for the locomotives was therefore the annual large snow clearance on the Furka mountain route until the opening of the Furka Base Tunnel in 1982 . This section of the route was not operational over the winter months and had to be reopened every spring . For strategic reasons, one locomotive was therefore stationed southwest of the Furka Pass in Brig and one northeast in Andermatt . After the merger of the Furka-Oberalp-Bahn and BVZ to form the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn, the two locomotives also moved to the new company's fleet. Both externally and technically there are some parallels to the two Gem 4/4 twin-power locomotives of the Rhaetian Railway that had been delivered a year earlier.
The locomotives serve as a reserve in the event of failure of the contact line. In winter they mostly travel with snow clearing trains. In the summer months, a locomotive is rented to the Furka Mountain Line Steam Railway , which it uses in front of passenger and work trains.
technology
The mechanical part of the MGB HGm 4/4 is identical to that of the RhB Gem 4/4 and consists of two Cummins diesel engines V12-825 with a total of 1134 kW, each working on a generator. There are no traction current collectors that enable the RhB Gem 4/4 to draw their electricity not only from the diesel generator but also from the contact line . For this purpose, the HGm 4/4 has a gear mechanism that can be decoupled from the adhesion drive for the Abt two-lamellar system used by the MGB . There is also a vacuum-controlled compressed air brake and an additional gear brake for use on the Schöllenenbahn . In order to be able to operate a pre-tensioned electric snow blower 4931-33 (SLM / MFO 1941-45) from the driver's cab , both vehicles are equipped with a remote control. When used like this, the slingshot draws its electricity from one generator group of the HGm 4/4, while the other generator group drives the locomotive. If, however, the newer Beilhack diesel snow blowers 4934 (1980, Andermatt) or 4935 (1986, Brig) are used, both generator groups are available for traction.
