Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 is a digital camera with a super zoom lens that belongs to the group of bridge cameras . The main technical features are the 5 megapixel - sensor , the 12x Leica - zoom lens with a focal length of 36 mm to 432 mm (corresponding to small image), and the image stabilization system MEGA OIS, a Panasonic development. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 has been around since September 2004. The continuous light intensity of 2.8 over the entire zoom range is a value unmatched by other models until the beginning of 2011.

Furnishing

Rear view of the Lumix FZ20

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 is equipped with a 12x Leica “Leica DC Vario- Elmarit ” zoom lens with a focal length of 36 mm to 432 mm (converted to a 35 mm image). This offers a light intensity of 1: 2.8 up to 432 mm focal length . The images are recorded on a 1 / 2.5 "RGB CCD sensor with a maximum resolution of 2560 × 1920 image points ( pixels ). The image processing takes place with a" Venus Engine II " processor . Blurring, especially with large ones Focal lengths are to be prevented by the image stabilization system "MEGA OIS" (Optical Image Stabilizer). This image stabilization consists of sensors that analyze the camera movements and a group of lenses in the lens that is offset against these movements and thus compensates them. The images are recorded SD ( Secure Digital ) or MMC ( MultiMediaCard ) memory cards with a maximum storage capacity of two gigabytes (GB) recorded in JPEG or TIFF format. The camera has an electronic viewfinder with 114,000 pixels and a 2-inch display with 130,000 pixels .

service

Control elements (mode dial) and hot shoe

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 offers both automatic mode and motif programs (portrait, sport / action, landscape, night landscape, pull-along effect, portrait at night, fireworks, party, snow), as well as full manual control. This manual control includes, among other things, the choice of aperture and exposure time (between 8 and 1/2000 seconds), manual focusing ( focusing ), light sensitivity ( ISO value ) and manual white balance . A mode dial on the top is used to set the exposure program and the exposure button and the arrow buttons on the back of the camera for aperture and exposure time. Manual focusing is carried out using a focusing ring on the lens. A section of the image in the middle of the image is enlarged for a few seconds to make it easier to focus.

Manual white balance is possible via the menu. Exposure control is also possible using semi-automatic functions, such as aperture or shutter speed priority. The exposure metering takes place via variable multi-field or center-weighted integral or spot metering. The methods using 1, 3 or 9 fields or spots are available for automatic focusing. The camera also has the functions for a series of exposures , a playback magnifying glass with 2, 4, 8 or 16 times magnification and an operating aid on the lower edge of the display, in which the currently possible operating functions are displayed.

picture quality

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 is certified in test reports for a 5-megapixel digital camera with good resolution values. With ISO 100 light sensitivity, these are 830 to 910 line pairs per image height in the center of the image, depending on the focal length. Other sources give the resolution in lines per image height as 1380. In the corners and at higher ISO values, these values are naturally lower.

One point of criticism is the camera's image noise at ISO 200 and especially at ISO 400. At ISO 80 it is acceptable and is 24.0 dB S / N , and at ISO 400 it is 12.9 dB S / N. In comparison, the noise value at ISO 400 of digital SLR cameras is between 35 and 55 dB S / N. The distortion is clearly visible barrel-shaped in the wide-angle range and is seen as a concession to the large focal length range and the light intensity. This decreases with increasing focal length and is low from a focal length of 100 mm. The vignetting is visible, but is also attributed to the speed of the lens. A special feature is the camera's internal reduction of chromatic aberration . This effect is greatly reduced by algorithms during signal processing.

The effectiveness of image stabilization cannot be measured directly. The manufacturer and in test reports indicate two to three steps longer exposure times for effectiveness. This means that without image stabilization in the wide-angle range, an exposure time of at least between 1/40 and 1/30 of a second would be necessary. (The rule of thumb for this is that the longest exposure time in seconds corresponds roughly to the reciprocal of the focal length in millimeters.) With image stabilization, shake-free recordings are still possible in the wide-angle range with exposure times of 1/8 to 1/6 seconds.
