Medical center

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A specialist medical center , also a medical center or medical center , is understood to be a common location of medical practices of different specialists .

The expansion of the specialist medical center to include other health professions - physiotherapists, psychosocial and social medical services, midwives, pharmacies and emergency services - is called the health center .

Basics

The advantage of a medical center ( community, group practice) is a shared infrastructure (such as a shared radiology department or a laboratory on site) and short distances for the patient. The increase in the cost of medical branches due to always high-quality equipment can be counteracted through shared use and better utilization. Which doctors actually practice in the medical center depends on the available staff, their specialization, the branches in nearby medical centers and the department status of the nearby hospitals .

Medical centers close to hospitals are known as polyclinics : this is where the infrastructure and special departments are located in the hospital itself, at the medical center the resident doctors practice , which, for example, relieves the hospitals' outpatient departments . In addition, the practice of the profession is much easier for those doctors - as well as their patients - who work as independent doctors or operate their private patients themselves in the hospital.

Specialist medical centers ( rural outpatient clinics ) are installed in smaller central locations , particularly in more rural areas . Here they represent an intermediate level of care between the family doctor in the village, if there is no competent specialist, and the next hospital in the higher-ranking central city. This way of settlement closes the gaps that arise in the establishment of specialists, who are also under medical shortage today suffers like general practitioners and, on the other hand, the concentration of rural small hospitals, which leads to a reduction in local medical care.

The Austrian Medical Association, for example, followed a stricter approach. An attempt is being made to develop a new form of organization between the hospital and the resident doctors under the term medical center ( specialist outpatient departments ) . These medical centers should actually take over that part of today's tasks of a hospital that are not part of its core competence, namely inpatient treatment . As a result, a large part of the outpatient service could be withdrawn from the hospital sector : In the modern, bed- based economy of the hospitals, the outpatient service is a large, unprofitable additional burden if the hospital outpatient clinics are used to provide basic medical services. The model is similar to the medical care center as a legal form in Germany.

Overall, the specialist medical center follows the approach that the economy generally pursues with the competence center , i.e. increasing quality through synergy without creating overly dense spatial concentrations. Specialist medical centers are therefore usually set up in closer cooperation with the municipalities as well as the regional regional planning of the state and the social insurance funds.

In view of the shortage of doctors in rural areas, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians Schleswig-Holstein has set up a funding program that financially supports local authorities in setting up medical centers. In this model, doctors are not freelance, but employed. With the Büsum Medical Center , the first municipal medical center in Germany was built in 2015.

Austria

In Austria, a basic agreement on the organization and financing of the health system was made in 2005 as an Article 15a contract between the federal government and the federal states . The state health funds and the health platforms as their organs were set up at state level (Art. 16/2005 and 20/2008). Their tasks include in particular "planning, control and financing of the health system in the state". One of the assigned tasks is the "Realization of joint model tests for integrated planning, implementation and financing of specialist medical care in the area of hospital outpatient clinics and the private practice area (development of new cooperation models and / or medical centers, etc.)" (Art. 16. Z. 1 11 . 2005).

Under the concept of the objective pursued by the Austrian Medical Association approach medical center "New" to establish a new form of organization between the Institute hospital and the established medical practice, fails for the time being because there are no appropriate permissible form of economy: The practicing doctor as a liberal profession a Sole proprietorships and joint practices are usually anchored as an open-ended company . For the time being, there is no possibility for doctors to set up a company as a corporation - as is possible for civil engineers, for example in the form of an architecture office.

The Tyrolean company M'Management , for example, is pursuing a similar approach , which has so far set up four managed medical centers in Austria under the name Medicent (Baden, Innsbruck, Linz, Salzburg). This has resulted in medical centers in which more than 150 doctors use the surgery infrastructure on a contract basis, including day surgery.

Great Britain

The Harley Street in London's City of Westminster is a single "specialized medical center".
