The Grafschaft monastery specialist hospital is a specialist lung clinic in Schmallenberg in the climatic health resort of Grafschaft . It is located in the listed Grafschaft monastery and is part of the Catholic order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Charles Borromeo . Since April 2012 the hospital has been a teaching hospital of the Philipps University of Marburg .
history
The house developed from a rest home opened in 1950 for miners from the Ruhr area who were marked by silicosis . Karl Bisa became the first chief physician of the Silicosis Hospital . The first new building was erected between 1964 and 1966. Lung and bronchial medicine has been increasingly developed in-house, and an allergology department has also existed since 1982 . In 1987 a sleep laboratory with 20 measuring stations was created. The department for early rehabilitation after long-term ventilation with 20 beds has existed since March 2005. Research projects have been carried out in the field of pulmonology since 1991 .
The Kloster Grafschaft nursing school was attached to the hospital for over 25 years . This was later relocated. The buildings of the former school have now been converted into a residential complex suitable for the elderly. Nursing training is now carried out in cooperation with the network nursing school of the Hochsauerland Clinic at the St. Walburga Hospital in Meschede .
Focus
Among the priorities include pulmonology, respiratory medicine , weaning (weaning), sleep medicine with its own sleep laboratory , allergy and since 2017, the Department of Geriatrics. The internal medicine areas include gastroenterology , cardiology , oncology , nephrology and endocrinology . The specialist hospital is part of the working group for pulmonary clinics. An intensive care unit with eighteen beds is available for special treatment cases. There is a full-body computed tomograph . The house has a helipad. At the end of 2018, after several extensions, the house had 200 beds and 480 employees. A total of over 7,000 inpatients and 16,000 outpatients are cared for each year. Over 4,000 patients are cared for annually in the field of pneumology. Every year around 180 long-term ventilated patients are transferred from intensive care units in other acute hospitals across Germany to Grafschaft. In the field of sleep medicine, the clinical sleep laboratory with 21 measuring stations and more than 4000 polygraphic or polysomnographic recordings annually is one of the largest laboratories in North Rhine-Westphalia . P. 2 The current medical director and chief physician of the department for respiratory medicine and palliative medicine is Peter Haidl, who replaced Dieter Köhler as chief physician for many years. Dominic Dellweg heads the Intensive Care Medicine, Early Rehabilitation and Sleep Medicine department and Friedrich Riffelmann heads the Allergology Department. The cardiology department is headed by Christian Berndt.
