Endeavor Settlement
In February 1998, with the participation of the University of Otago's Antropology Department , the Southland Museum and Art Gallery and the Department of Conservation, an archaeological study of the western shore area of Facile Harbor , known as the Endeavor Settlement of 1795-1797, was carried out. When, after a storm in October 1795, the captain of the Endeavor (not to be confused with the Endeavor of Captain James Cook ), William Wright Bampton , had to anchor in Facile Harbor due to leaks on the ship , the ship ran aground a few days later on a rock and then afterwards Reason. Some crew members, including the captain, were able to stay on the Fancy's escort ship and sail to Sydney . 35 members of the Endeavor crew stayed behind and lived in the settlement until they were rescued in May 1797.
