The Banff Springs Hotel is a former railway hotel of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the National Park of Banff in Canada . The CPR's luxurious railway hotels also included the nearby Chateau Lake Louise in Lake Louise or the Château Frontenac in Québec and the Empress at Victoria Harbor .
Cornelius Van Horne , then President of the CPR, wanted to offer wealthy guests exploring the West a luxurious hotel experience and thus promote the use of the transcontinental railroad. Therefore, in 1887-88, the railway administration built the first luxury hotel made of wood. The client made a mistake. They kept the blueprints rotated 180 degrees so that instead of offering the best view of the Bow River from its suites, the hotel was now facing the slope of Sulfur Mountain - which, on the other hand, was a million-dollar view for the kitchen staff “Gave.
The original hotel burned down in 1926 and was replaced by a new Scottish barony-style building in 1928 . Due to the Second World War , the hotel was closed between 1942 and 1945. It was not until the late 1960s that the hotel was made winter-proof and then opened all year round. For the 1988 Winter Olympics , the hotel was extensively restored and renovated. Further extensions and renovations followed in the 1990s.
Located in the Rocky Mountains , the luxury hotel belonged to the Canadian Pacific Hotels group for a long time and is now run by the Fairmont Hotels and Resorts group.
Under the name Banff Springs Hotel National Historic Site of Canada , the hotel was added to the directory of the National Historic Site of Canada on June 24, 1988 .
