The Falkenburg is a ruined castle in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . The ruins of the hilltop castle are at 190 m above sea level. NN above the Barbarossa cave between the villages of Rottleben and Steinthaleben on the southwestern edge of the Kyffhauser .
history
The castle, which probably only consisted of a residential tower surrounded by a deep moat , was probably built in the middle of the 12th century at the latest, but was only mentioned in documents in 1349 as the seat of Heinrich von Falkenburg. In 1458, now a robber baron's castle , it was conquered and destroyed by a large army. The army was sent by an alliance of the cities of Erfurt , Nordhausen , Mühlhausen with Saxe-Weimar , Schwarzburg , Hohnstein , Stolberg and the Electoral Mainz Eichsfeld . From the former Falkenburg only a single larger wall of the residential tower and the remains of a cistern are left.
Structural matters
The Falkenburg, situated on a limestone plateau, had a square floor plan, which was enclosed by a one and a half meter thick castle wall. The usable area was 31 m 2 , the courtyard area 18 m 2 .
