Occurrence

It mostly occurs on moist, clayey soils, but is also common on walls and rocks. It often colonizes calcareous locations and prefers partial shade. Therefore it is often found on north and east slopes. It is a holarctic deciduous moss, which occurs from the lowlands to over 2000 m.

features

The false whisker moss forms up to 2 cm high stems and grows in dirty green to brownish, loose, often extensive lawns and does not form a rhizoid felt . Its entire, about 1 to 2 mm long, lanceolate leaves are sparsely protruding when moist, but appear slightly twisted and pressed when dry. They are gradually pointed and keeled for a broad ovoid base. The leaf margins are rolled over along their entire length to just before the leaf tip. The lamina cells of the leaf base are sub-square and more or less transparent. The upper cells, on the other hand, are opaque, rounded and appear slightly papilose (warty). The midrib is strong and ends in the leaf tip. The reddish-brown seta has upright, oval to cylindrical shaped capsules with 32 peristome teeth at the front end , which are twisted three to four times to the left.
