Familienbande ( Russian Родные Rodnye , English Close Relations ) is a documentary by the Russian-Ukrainian director Vitali Manski from 2016. The film had its German premiere on November 1, 2016 at the Leipzig International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film . The film premiered on July 5, 2016 at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival . The Bavarian broadcasting has financed the film through a pre-emption (Presale).

In family ties , director Vitali Manski explores the causes of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in the mirror of his own family. It shows how the conflict divides even next of kin.

Vitali Manski was born in Lviv in western Ukraine and grew up there. At that time Lviv was still part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic . In the 1980s, Manski moved to Moscow to study at the renowned Gerasimov Institute for Cinematography . When the Soviet Union fell apart, as a resident of Moscow, he automatically became a Russian citizen. Most of his relatives remained in Ukraine and still live in Lviv, Odessa , the Donbass and on the Crimea peninsula annexed by Russia . There Manski visited his relatives in search of reasons for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
