Career

Farès Boueiz served as Foreign Minister from 1990. He stayed that way until 1992, when he left his post for a few months in protest against the general elections in 1992 and was temporarily replaced by Nasri Maalouf . It was Boueiz who, after a long period, attended the first official meeting in mid-May 1991 with Faruk Kadumi from the Political Department of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

He continued his work as Foreign Minister from 1992 in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Rafic Hariri . He and Hariri had a tense relationship as Hariri was always involved in foreign policy. When Boueiz was in office, his father-in-law, Élias Hraoui, became President of Lebanon. In 1998, Selim Hoss replaced Boueiz as Foreign Minister.

Boueiz was one of the presidential candidates after Émile Lahoud's first term in 2004. In 2003 Boueiz was appointed Environment Minister in the cabinet led by Rafic Hariri, replacing Michel Musa in this post. Boueiz was an independent member of the cabinet. He resigned on September 7, 2004 to protest the amendment that extended Lahoud's term as president. With him, three other ministers resigned, including Marwan Hamadeh , Ghazi Aridi and Abdullah Farhat. All four ministers voted against the extension of the term in parliament .

Minister of State Michel Musa replaced Boueiz as acting minister of the environment. Boueiz served as a member of parliament and represented Kesrouan until 2005 . After the end of Lahoud's tenure, Boueiz was re-run as a presidential candidate in 2007. In the 2009 general election , he was no longer on the March 14 Alliance list .

Points of view

Boueiz worked with the Syrian authorities during his second term as Foreign Minister . However, in 2001 he denied the Syrian Defense Minister Mustafa Tlass's allegations regarding the Maronite Patriarch Sfeir . On the other hand, Boueiz was skeptical about the peace agreement between Israel and the PLO in 1993 and stated that Palestinian refugees should not settle in Lebanon due to the sensitive demographic balance between native Christians and Muslims in the country. During talks with Egyptian told diplomats in early April 1998 Boueiz that the treatment of the Jewish people by the Nazis based on political reasons and that "they arrogantly behaved as the chosen people of God."
