Farsan (Swedish, slang for “the father”) is a Swedish comedy film directed by Josef Fares from 2010. It deals with the themes of love, friendship and family and premiered on February 12, 2010 in Sweden.

action

The focus of the action is Aziz (Farsan), an older man of Lebanese origin. He is a widower and father of the bank clerk Sami. Aziz himself works in his friend Jörgen's “Jörgens Cykel” bicycle shop. By the way, Juan and Edith, Jörgen's mother, are employed there. The film essentially deals with four problem constellations:

Sami lives with his wife Amanda. The problem that the couple cannot have children stands in the way of their desire to have children. However, since Aziz longs for their own grandchildren, Sami and Amanda keep silent about this obstacle, plan an early adoption and use pillows to simulate Amanda's pregnancy. When Amanda received a rejection of the intended adoption of a local child, the couple decided to adopt a child from China at short notice due to the shorter waiting times, although this is of course no longer compatible with the simulated pregnancy. That's why Sami and Amanda confront Aziz with the truth a little later.

Sami believes that Aziz's focus on wanting grandchildren is related to his loneliness since the death of his beloved wife. That is why he advises his father to look for a life partner again. After a failed pairing attempt with one of Amanda's colleagues and several unsuccessful encounters with other women, Aziz is increasingly keeping an eye on Edith. Aziz asks Jörgen to arrange a meeting with Edith. In fact, Aziz and Edith get to know each other better, but Aziz misunderstands Edith's friendly affection and shortly afterwards announces to Sami and Amanda that he will soon be married. When Aziz Edith proposes marriage over dinner, the friendship between the two seems to break.

Aziz questions Jörgen's relationship with his wife Lotta and claims that Jörgen is not male enough to live up to his role as a husband. Jörgen then imagines that Lotta could be having an affair with a muscular neighbor and develops complexes. The everyday life of the two is becoming increasingly tense. Aziz finally offers Jörgen to teach him masculinity and in return expects help from Edith to get to know him better. However, when Jörgen tries to apply Aziz's lessons to Lotta and presents himself in an exaggerated way as macho, it comes to a scandal.

Juan fears for his beloved but decrepit dog Dino, who suffers from osteoarthritis. A veterinarian recommends putting the animal to sleep, which Juan is strongly opposed to and instead builds a trolley for Dino in the bicycle shop. Aziz also makes him think that Dino should be given the opportunity to reproduce before he dies. Despite several attempts, however, this plan cannot be realized and Juan finally decides to put Dinos to sleep.

Towards the end, the individual strands are dissolved: Juan plans to buy a parrot. Jörgen speaks to Lotta and understands that strong masculinity is not expected of him. Aziz can save the friendship with Edith in a sensitive way. He also finally accepts the adopted Chinese grandchild, whom he first met shortly after his adoption in the last scene of the film.

Reactions in Sweden

  • After the premiere weekend , Farsan rose to number 1 on the Swedish cinema charts. Between February 12 and 14, 2010 inclusive, 84,284 cinema-goers in Sweden saw the film.
  • Åsa Johansson of the Dalarnas Tidningar (Dalarnas Newspapers) mentions the risk of wanting to put too much material in a single film, but describes the film as moving.
  • Karolina Fjellborg from Aftonbladet (a Swedish evening newspaper) thinks Farsan is not exactly the best of Josef Fares' films, but she says the comedy she describes as warm and loving is laughable.
