Fatih Hilmioğlu

Fatih Hilmioğlu (* 1954 in Elbistan County in the Kahramanmaraş Province ) is a Turkish university professor, dean and doctor.

Life

Hilmioğlu graduated from Ankara Cumhuriyet Lisesi (Ankara High School of the Republic) in 1972 and trained as a doctor at the medical faculty of Hacettepe University until 1979 . His specialization in internal diseases took place between 1980 and 1985 in Germany in the hospital in Hoya and at the University of Duisburg-Essen . From 1987 to 1990 he made a subsidiary specialization in Ankara at the Yüksek İhtisas Hospital in the field of gastroenterology. From 1990 to 1992 he was the main gastroenterological assistant at the same hospital. Hilmioğlu was appointed lecturer on October 16, 1991 and professor on March 13, 1997. From 1996 to 1998 he was chief physician at the Turgut Özal medical center . From January 26, 1998 to June 30, 1998, he was the assistant and deputy dean of the medical faculty. On June 30, 1998, he was appointed dean of the medical school. In addition to Turkish, he also speaks German and English, is married and has two children. Until his arrest, he was the director of Inönü University in Malatya .

Ergenekon investigation

Hilmioğlu was arrested along with other university directors as part of the Ergenekon investigation in 2009 and was suspected of plotting with others to overthrow Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government and his AKP party . This alleged conspiracy turned out to be an invented construct after 2013, the legal processing of which lasted until July 1, 2019 as part of the revision. The process, initiated by supporters of the Gülen movement and affiliated organizations, aimed to weaken the military structure of the state and the political opposition. Hilmioğlu was arrested in April 2009. On August 5, 2013, the verdict of the Ergenekon trial came, during which Hilmioğlu was sentenced to 23 years in prison. In 2012, while Hilmioğlu was imprisoned, his son was involved in a traffic accident, as a result of which he died. He was denied permission to visit his son in good time and only allowed to travel by land, so that the university professor was only able to attend the funeral of his son, who had since passed away.
