Faustin Twagiramungu

Faustin Twagiramungu (* 1945 in the province of Cyangugu ) is a Rwandan politician who belongs to the Hutu ethnic group.

From 1994 until his abdication in 1995, he was the first appointed Prime Minister of Rwanda after the Rwandan Patriotic Front captured Kigali . After resigning from office, he went into exile in Belgium for almost a decade .

In the 2003 presidential election, Twagiramungu was an independent candidate. In his election manifesto he mainly advocated full employment and progressive taxation. He accused the government of suppressing his views in public. In the last count, he finished second behind his challenger Paul Kagame with 3.65% of the vote . He challenged this result first, complaining that the new incumbent wanted to lead the country into a one-party system.

He graduated from Québec University in the 1960s .
