Faxekalk (also Faksekalk ) is a rather crumbly limestone interspersed with corals . It was named after a large limestone deposit near Faxe on the island of Zealand ( Sjælland / Denmark ).

Faxe limestone was formed 65 to 60 million years ago in the Danian , the oldest stage of the geological epoch of the Paleocene and thus also the Cenozoic . In addition to various types of coral, cephalopods , snails and mussels also formed rocks. Often the fossils are still very easy to see and can also be removed. Some corals were attacked by sponges while the rock was forming, which gave the rock its typical porous appearance. In addition to the outcrop at Faxe, fax limestone can be found in deeper layers under large parts of the island of Zealand and southern Sweden ( Skåne ).

Faxekalk is considered a guiding attachment . The direction of movement of Ice Age glaciers can be deduced from the points where it was found in northern Germany .
