Fears (also Wszystkie nasze strachy for “All our fears” in Polish ) is a film by Łukasz Gutt and Łukasz Ronduda , which is due to premiere at the New Horizons International Film Festival in August 2021. In the biography , Dawid Ogrodnik plays the contemporary Polish artist, sculptor and LGBTQ activist Daniel Rycharski.

The gay artist Daniel lives in Poland and has to live his relationship with Olek in secret. When a girl in his village commits suicide, he wants to organize a memorial service for her, but he meets with resistance from the residents. Daniel hopes that the big city art scene will react differently and more openly to his plans.

Biographical

Daniel Rycharski, whose story the film tells, is a Polish sculptor and LGBTQ activist. His main activity are artistic actions in rural areas, so he is the creator of rural street art. He grew up in the country himself and was heavily involved in the activities of the Catholic Church . Rycharski was born in Sierpiec in Mazovia in 1986 and now lives and works in Kurówko and Krakow. From 2005 to 2009 he studied graphic design at the Faculty of Art of the Pedagogical University of Krakow, where he now teaches at the Chair of Multimedia. Rycharski has been a PhD student in the interdisciplinary studio of Zbigniew Sałaj and Grzegorz Sztwiertnia at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow since 2010. During his studies Rycharski founded an artist group with Sławomir Shuty. In 2016 he was awarded the Paszporty Polityki Prize .

In 2018 Rycharski exhibited his project “Strachy” (Polish for “scarecrows” or “fear”) in a field near Kurówko, a village in the Masovian Voivodeship in northeastern Poland. It consisted of brightly painted Latin, isosceles Greek and Russian Orthodox wooden crosses, some of which were wrapped with barbed wire. The colorful clothes integrated in it belonged to people with a homosexual orientation who were discriminated against.

Directed by Łukasz Gutt and Łukasz Ronduda . Gutt is a graduate of the Faculty of Radio and Television of the Silesian University in Katowice (currently Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School of the Silesian University in Katowice) and the EKRAN program at the Wajda School. His film debut as a cameraman, Ki von Leszek Dawid in 2011, received numerous awards and nominations, including at the Polish Film Festival and Camerimage. He has also worked as a screenwriter for In hidden , Jeziorak , Kamerdyner and Performer and Heart of Love , for which he worked with Ronduda. Ronduda, who also wrote the screenplay with producer Katarzyna Sarnowska and Michał Oleszczyk, is an art historian, a graduate of the directing and screenwriting program at the Wajda School, developed into an expert in experimental film and is the initiator of the Filmoteka Muzeum project at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw. As director and screenwriter of the film Performer , Ronduda received the Think: Film Award at the 2015 Berlinale .

Dawid Ogrodnik plays the leading role Daniel Rycharski. Agata Łabno , Karolina Bruchnicka , Jowita Budnik , Andrzej Chyra , Maria Maj , Jacek Poniedzialek , Oskar Rybaczek and Piotr Trojan can also be seen in other roles .

The film received a grant of 1.7 million PLN / PLN from the Polish Film Institute. The film was shot in autumn 2020, in October of that year in the Suwałki region. Gutt also acted as a cameraman on the film.

In July 2021, the film was presented at the Marché du Film in Cannes. The premiere is to take place in August 2021 at the New Horizons International Film Festival (also Polish Days), where the film will be shown in the main competition. It will be presented at the Gdynia Polish Film Festival at the end of September 2021 .
