Life

Federica de Cesco was born in 1938 in Friuli , northern Italy, to an Italian father and a German mother . She grew up multilingual and speaks fluent Italian, German and French, as she lived with her parents in Ethiopia, Italy, France, Northern Germany and Belgium during the Second World War . She studied art history and psychology at the University of Liège . In 1962 Federica de Cesco moved to Switzerland; she lives in Lucerne today . She has been married to the Japanese photographer Kazuyuki Kitamura since 1971. From her first marriage to a Swiss woman, she has two children, Manuela Federica and Marc-Daniel.

She is a globetrotter herself and for a while also lived with the Tuareg - a nomadic people in the Sahara . She has processed her travel experiences and her folklore knowledge in several books, to which her husband contributed the photos. The protagonists of their stories are mostly self-confident girls who rebel against imposed norms. Federica de Cesco herself had, for example, B. Forbidden to wear trousers in school.

A film about her life by director Nino Jacusso was released on March 6, 2008 in Switzerland. Since 2013 she has been an adviser to the Lakota Foundation for the education of Lakota children.
