Federico Faggin (born December 1, 1941 in Vicenza , Italy ) is an Italian microchip specialist and entrepreneur .

life and career

He received his PhD in physics from the University of Padua in 1965. In 1967 he worked for SGS-Fairchild in Italy. He emigrated to the USA in 1968 to work at Fairchild Semiconductor . In 1970 he switched to Intel .

In January 1971, he almost single-handedly developed in the first CPU for Intel, the Intel 4004 , on the The he left his signature in some specimens. In October 1974 he left Intel and founded his own company Zilog , where he created the Zilog Z80 CPU by May 1976 , a CPU that was compatible with the Intel 8080 , but more powerful and cheaper.

In 1982 he was the co-founder and president of Cygnet Technologies. In 1986 he was co-founder and president of Synaptics Inc. In 1997 he received the prestigious Kyoto Prize . From 2002 to 2010 worked again on the Zilog supervisory board.

In 2006 he was awarded the European Inventor Award in the “Lifetime Achievement” category. In 2010 he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from US President Barack Obama . In 1994 he received the W. Wallace McDowell Award and in 2014 the Premio Enrico Fermi .

The "Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation" founded in 2011 supports US universities and research institutes in order to advance the understanding of consciousness through theoretical and experimental research.
