history

Baptist prayer house in Felde

The history of Feld, like that of Moorburg , is closely linked to Hollwege , whose farmers once owned the area. Here, too, a hill with a Landwehr was built to protect against attacks by the East Frisians . Although there is no documentary evidence of this facility, the remains of a rampart and moat can still be seen between the field and the moor castle. Excavations by the archaeologist Dieter Zoller confirmed the existence of this so-called "Friesenschanze", which today gives its name to a street in Felde.

The settlement of the boggy lowland area did not begin until later, when mostly hiring men from the Hollweger farmers moved to the field as mutt . The original name of the settlement was "Up'n Feld" ( Low German for Auf dem Feld ) or "Zum Felde". In 1679, eight mutt locations are recorded in the Oldenburg contribution register.

In 1850 the Baptists built a house of prayer in Felde and laid out a cemetery on his property . There is also the grave of the Baptist lay preacher and farmer Frerich Bohlken , who played a not inconsiderable role in the introduction of civil marriage in the then Grand Duchy of Oldenburg . Today the prayer house is the oldest of its kind in continental Europe and is a listed building . While the community life of the Baptists has shifted to the church built in the city center of Westerstede, the fields prayer house is used for special church events and as a cemetery chapel.
