Field Diary - Alone Among Men is a German documentary by Aelrun Goette from 2001. It was broadcast on SWR in 2002 and thematically deals with the basic training (AGA) of four female recruits in III. Train of the 6./Panzergrenadierbataillon 294. The women are four of the first female recruits in combat units of the Bundeswehr.

action

Four women have chosen a career in the Bundeswehr. You will be drafted into the 294 Panzer Grenadier Battalion in the Alb barracks in Stetten am kalten Markt . They approach the upcoming challenges of training with confidence, but sometimes without knowing what they have actually gotten themselves into. Right from the start, three of the four recruits found it visibly difficult to meet the physical requirements. Premature exhaustion and the first sick leave are the result. The wet and cold weather in November and December, as well as the behavior of the trainers, also demotivate the women. A recruit recognizes her chance and often has the troop doctor put her on sick leave. Her behavior makes her an outsider on the train. Another recruit is absent longer due to illness and therefore has to drop out of training. For their part, the trainers show no particular consideration for women. The platoon leader demands the same performance from all of his recruits and is disappointed by the sometimes inadequate commitment of the female recruits. Two of the three remaining recruits finally pass the recruit inspection.

implementation

The documentary completely dispenses with off-screen comments . Often, scenes are underlaid with pieces of music that reinforce the impressions of what is shown. Example: Van Morrison - "And is Stoned Me" while the recruits sit around the campfire. In addition, the music is also used as a transition for scenes that have been taken out of context in terms of content, but are thus perceived by the audience as a unit. Example: The company commander orders the demolition of the training bivouac, the music starts and in the next scene recruits are shown during the training "Transporting the Wounded".

reception

The behavior of the superiors shown in the film caused a stir after the broadcast. In his annual report for 2002, the Defense Commissioner of the German Bundestag spoke of misconduct in the tone of voice of trainers and inadequate management behavior by superiors . In two cases, judicial disciplinary proceedings had been initiated; the matter had been dealt with by the troops concerned and the Army Command in unit commanders' meetings and in officer and non-commissioned officer training.
