Karl Joseph Ferdinand Felix Hauptmann (born February 8, 1856 in Bonn , † October 24, 1934 in Remagen ) was a German lawyer , local researcher and heraldist .

Hauptmann was a son of the publisher and center politician Peter Hauptmann (1825–1895) and a brother of the publisher and writer Carl Hauptmann . He attended the Jesuit grammar school in Bonn and finally the grammar school in Vechta . This was followed by a law degree at the universities of Bonn , Leipzig and Strasbourg . In Göttingen he was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD . After his habilitation in 1894, Hauptmann was professor of law at the universities of Freiburg in Switzerland (from 1896) and Bonn; In 1931/32 he was also the rector of the University of Freiburg. In many of his writings he dealt with the legal field of the coat of arms . His position on the view that the coat of arms was already legally regulated from the beginning, met with criticism in professional circles. In addition, he dealt with Bonn's homeland history in several publications and was politically committed to Catholicism ; after the First World War he also campaigned for the Rhenish Republic .

Hauptmann was a city ​​councilor in Bonn from 1891 to 1896 and a member of the Prussian House of Representatives for the center from 1895 to 1918 as a member of the Cologne 3 constituency (Stadt- und Landkreis Bonn - Landkreis Rheinbach) .

Hauptmann died of a stroke in Remagen on a job-related trip to Switzerland. He was buried in the old cemetery in Bonn .
