Felix Mussil
Felix Mussil (born January 9, 1921 in Berlin ; † February 8, 2013 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German cartoonist and worked for the Frankfurter Rundschau for 46 years .
Life
Mussil graduated from high school in Berlin in 1939 and then began studying architecture at the TH Berlin (now the Technical University of Berlin ). In 1941 Mussil was drafted into the Wehrmacht , in 1945 he returned from a Soviet captivity. In Hanover he started selling caricatures to local daily and weekly newspapers as a freelancer in 1948.
According to an internal newspaper legend, Mussil drove to Frankfurt am Main in 1955 with nothing but ten caricatures under his arm and without a return ticket and presented his drawings to the editor of the newly created Frankfurter Rundschau, Karl Gerold , who immediately hired him. His caricatures always appeared on the front page of the newspaper. Mussil worked in his own atelier on the roof of the Rundschau building , which he called “Kabäuschen”, away from the editorial staff and other offices .
He worked according to the motto:
“Funny but not scornful, polemical but not dogmatic, apt but not at any cost. Always the pen in the ink, but never in the poison. "
He remained loyal to the Frankfurter Rundschau for almost half a century and only retired late in 2002 at the age of 81. On his eightieth birthday, the Frankfurt Museum of Comic Art organized an exhibition of some of his works in the Historical Museum . All of the original drawings since the late 1960s - several thousand works - were given to the museum by Mussil in 2003. Most recently he lived in the “Dichterviertel” of Frankfurt.
