Felix T. Rapaport

Felix Theodosius Rapaport (born September 27, 1929 in Munich ; † April 12, 2001 ) was a German-born American doctor who worked in the field of transplant medicine .

Live and act

Rapaport grew up in Munich. Because of the persecution of the Jews in Nazi Germany, his parents emigrated with him to France in 1935. There he learned the French language. After the occupation of France, the family fled to the Dominican Republic , where he developed a close relationship with Latin America, which he was later able to use during his academic career. In 1945 he moved to New York City , he attended college and later the medical school of New York University and specialized in the field of surgery . He became director of the Department of Transplantation and Immunology . In 1977 he moved to Stony Brook Universityand has held senior positions in the field of transplantation, histocompatibility and immunogenetics . In 1995 he became professor of surgery and immunology at Stony Brook University. He died on April 12, 2001 in the US state of Florida at a family reunion on the occasion of the Passover festival.

Rapaport made important contributions in the field of transplant medicine, especially the immunological compatibility of tissues. Here he worked closely with the Nobel Prize winner Jean Dausset , who recognized Rapaport's contribution in his Nobel Lecture.

Rapaport published more than 500 scientific articles. He was a co-founder of the journal Transplantation Proceedings . In 1992 he became an external member ( associé étranger ) of the Académie des sciences . In 1998 he was awarded the Transplantation Society's Medawar Prize. The French President Jacques Chirac appointed him commander of the Legion of Honor .
