The company was founded in connection with the construction of the Reichswerke AG for ore mining and ironworks "Hermann Göring" in the Salzgitter area (today Salzgitter AG ) at the end of the 1930s as Steine- und Erden GmbH . It has had its current name since 1971.

In 1991 Fels-Werke, which at that time was still a subsidiary of Preussag AG , acquired the East German Harz-Kalk GmbH with the plants Kaltes Tal , Rübeland and Hornberg in the East Harz , Schraplau near Halle (Saale) and in Oberrohn in Thuringia from the Treuhand near Eisenach . After taking over the lime works Rüdersdorf and Saal an der Donau in 1999, the company rose to become the second largest lime producer in Germany.

In 2002 the company was acquired by Xella Deutschland GmbH and assigned to the raw materials division.

In 2008 Xella was taken over by Goldman Sachs Capital Partners and PAI partners , until then the company belonged to the Duisburg-based Haniel Group.

Today Fels-Werke belongs to the Cement Roadstone Holding Group based in Dublin .

The main buyers for lime and hydrated lime products are the building materials industry , the iron, steel and metal industry , the chemical industry, environmental protection, waste water and drinking water treatment and road construction.
