The rock face "Tauchstein" is a large natural monument and a geotope in the area of the Baden-Württemberg community Talheim in the district of Heilbronn.
Characteristics
The approximately 6800 m² natural monument was designated by ordinance of July 18, 1986.
Location and description
The Tauchstein rock face is located at the southern end of Talheim, where it forms a section of the steep, lower eastern escarpment of the Schozach valley. In the north of this section there is a small, disused ( abandoned ) limestone quarry . The embankment section and quarry are now protected by law as a natural monument and, under the name Felswand Tauchstein and the abandoned quarry S von Talheim , as a geotope . In the quarry, the upper "Ceratitenschichten" (are Meissner formation ) of the upper shell limestone ( "main shell") up to just below the contact to the lower keuper ( " Lettenkeuper " Erfurt Formation ) attached to the top slopes of Schozach valley is present , open . After the quarry was closed, a larger body of water, the Tauchsteinsee , gradually formed there.
Above the clayey and therefore water-retaining layers of the Upper Muschelkalk, groundwater that is rich in dissolved calcium carbonate ("lime") escapes on the rock face in the southeast of the quarry . Due to the turbulence and the warming of the water at the source outlets, “ thick sintered wallpapers” were created in places .
