The city is located 103 km north of Toamasina (Tamatave) on National Road 5 .

The Fenoarivo Atsinanana area is one of the main growing areas for cloves . Coffee is also grown in the area.
history
In the 17th century, Fénérive-Est was a pirate port. The first king of the Betsimisaraka , Ratsimilaho, was the son of a privateer and a local princess. The king is buried on the small island of Nosy Hely, the former fortress of the pirates (Vohimasina) can be visited there.
