Ferdinand Bernhard von Hoffmann

Ferdinand Bernhard Edler von Hoffmann (born February 4, 1731 in Brake ; † February 21, 1802 ibid) was a German lawyer , government and chamber president in the Principality of Lippe and from 1777 Lippe Chancellor .

life and work

Ferdinand Bernhard was the 14th of 17 children of Johann Christoph Hoffmann (1670–1749), Oberamtmann , Hofrat and Drost in Lippe, and his second wife Agnese Louise nee. Gelshorn (1694-1752). Ferdinand Bernhard's birthplace at Bahnhofstrasse 19 in Brake still exists. His grandfather, Johann Balthasar (von) Hoffmann (1639–1705), who came from a family of officials in Hesse, was already the counsel and comforter of Count zur Lippe-Brake .

He completed his law studies in Marburg and Jena . From 1754 he worked as a lawyer in Detmold . From 1758 to 1763 he was a councilor in Steinfurt , then from 1763 third councilor in Detmold, in 1764 chairman of the regional court, in 1768 president of the consistory and then he was promoted to the Lippe government. In 1774 he became the government and chamber director and head of all upper colleges. He was appointed Chancellor of Lippe in 1777.

Hoffmann managed the country's fortunes with great success in the second half of the 18th century. In particular, with Count Simon August, he led the county of Lippe out of its financial and economic trough. Furthermore, he promoted the school and health system, he brought innovations and facilitations in agriculture. He also improved conditions in prisons. After Prince Leopold and Pauline married , Hoffmann was deposed in 1796.

In 1789 he was awarded the title "Imperial Knight Edler von Hoffmann" ennobled .

Among other things, he wrote a prince's seal for Leopold I and a service history that he wrote on his estate in Brake.

Ferdinand Bernhard died on February 21, 1802 on his Adelshof estate in Brake (now Eichenmüllerhaus Braker in the middle of 39). His tomb is in the cemetery at the Braker church.

Ferdinand Bernhard von Hoffmann married Henriette Reymann (1750-1825) on February 21, 1770, a daughter of Johann Wilhelm Reymann, Chancellor of Lippe. The following are known of his children who reached adulthood:
