Ferdinand Brunetière

Life

Brunetière went to school in Marseille . He then studied at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand . Initially, he aspired to the career of a teacher, but he failed in the exams at the École normal supérieure . The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 prevented him from making a second attempt. After he had published some articles in the magazine Revue Bleue , he began to work for the Revue des Deux Mondes , initially as a simple employee, but rose to the magazine's chief editor until 1893.

From 1886 Brunetière worked as Maître de conférences (professor) for French language and literature at the École normal supérieure . In 1887 he was appointed a member of the Légion d'Honneur , in 1893 he was admitted to the Académie française , and in 1898 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Before 1895, Brunetière was classified as a rationalist . That year he published an article about a visit to the Vatican in which he argued that science was incapable of producing moral norms. He did not shy away from dealing with authorities. Because of his rigor, intolerance and aggressiveness, this meant that he was rejected by many, including those who valued his professional skills and intellectual abilities.
