In 2001 he took over the youth welfare office .

After the result of the municipal election on September 26, 2004 , in which he ran for the first time, a runoff election between the previous incumbent Hans-Josef Siebertz (CDU) (38.9%) and Ferdinand Gatzweiler (41.9%) was necessary. In the runoff election on October 10, 2004, Gatzweiler was elected mayor with 58.7%.

In the local elections on August 30, 2009 , he was clearly confirmed in office with 47.7%. His strongest challenger, Paul M. Kirch from the CDU , only got 38.2%. During the election campaign he was also the candidate of the local branch of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen , which, unlike all other parties , had not put up a candidate for mayor of their own.

In his second candidacy for re-election in May 2014 , Gatzweiler clearly failed with 29% against his challenger Tim Grüttemeier (CDU), who was elected the new mayor of the city of Stolberg with 51.8% in the first ballot.

Gatzweiler has been married to Brigitte Gatzweiler since 1982, with whom he has a son.
