Life

Surprised , 1888

Fagerlin initially devoted himself to shipbuilding in his hometown (1842–1843). Then he was a student at the Stockholm Art Academy (1845–1847). He then went to the military, where he served as a non-commissioned officer (1850-1854). During this time he could only pursue art, especially portrait painting , during leisure hours . From 1854 he devoted himself entirely to painting. With the support of previous teachers, he went to the Düsseldorf Art Academy to study with Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Wilhelm von Schadow (1854–1855). He then traveled to Paris (1856–1858), where he temporarily worked in Thomas Couture's studio .

Then Fagerlin returned to Düsseldorf. Here he settled as a freelance painter and married Alice Windgassen, sister-in-law of the painter Henry Ritter († 1853), whose studio and estate he took over. From 1862 to 1902 he was a member of the Malkasten artists' association . He took Gustaf Cederström into his studio as a private student in 1867/1868, from 1875 to 1880 Axel Kulle .

Since 1863 he made several study trips to and through Holland. The pictorial motifs there, especially the Dutch coastal landscape with everyday beach and sailor life, its customs and anecdotes, shaped Fagerlin's genre painting from then on .

In 1867 Fagerlin exhibited the pictures The Marriage Proposal and The Jealousy at the Paris World Exhibition .

He died in Düsseldorf six weeks after his 82nd birthday.
