Christian Ferdinand Friedrich von Krauss , called Ferdinand Krauss, (born July 9, 1812 in Stuttgart , † September 14, 1890 ibid) was a German botanist and malacologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " C. Krauss ".

Life

After an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Stuttgart, Krauss was a pharmacist's assistant in Heilbronn, Göppingen, Zurich and Aubonne. He then studied pharmacy in Tübingen and Heidelberg and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1836. From 1837 to 1840 he explored the flora of Cape Land and Natal as the companion of Baron Carl Ferdinand Heinrich von Ludwig .

He was a supervisor and professor at the Royal Natural History Cabinet in Stuttgart (Department of Zoology, Mineralogy) and, in 1890, its director.

In 1844 he was instrumental in founding the Association for Patriotic Natural History in Württemberg .

In 1847 he became a member of the Leopoldina . In 1880 he was ennobled. His herbarium came partly to the British Museum ( Natural History Museum ), partly to the Stuttgart Natural History Museum .

He also dealt with mollusks, including the first description of Modiolus auriculatus (Krauss 1848) from him.

Honors

In his honor is the Kraussia Harv plant genus . from the family of the redness plants named (Rubiaceae). The plant species Cycnium kraussianum Benth. and Selaginella kraussiana (Kunze) A.Braun were named after him.
