Ferdinand Victor Léon Roybet (born April 12, 1840 in Uzès ; died April 11, 1920 in Paris ) was a French painter .

life and work

Ferdinand Roybet was born in Uzès in 1840 as the son of an innkeeper. The family settled in Lyon in 1846. There Roybet studied art at the École des beaux-arts . In 1863 he moved to Paris, where he became a student of the painter Jean-Georges Vibert . From 1865 he exhibited paintings in the Salon de Paris . In his work, Roybet orientated himself towards Flemish and Italian masters of the Baroque and chose mostly portraits and genre scenes with historical motifs as motifs. His works were very popular with his contemporaries and found their way into private and public collections in France and the United States. Roybet was also active as an eraser. In his late work he turned to biblical subjects such as the Passion of Christ . His student Consuelo Fould donated the Musée Roybet Fould to the city of Courbevoie in 1927 , in which works by both artists can be seen.
