The Ferguson Lake is a lake in the Kivalliq Region in Nunavut (Canada).

The lake is about 150 km north of the tree line , halfway between Yathkyed Lake and Qamanirjuaq Lake . The Ferguson River drains Ferguson Lake on its east bank and flows to Hudson Bay, 210 km east . Baker Lake , the closest settlement, is 100 miles north of Ferguson Lake.

The lake was discovered by polar explorer Joseph Tyrrell's Geological Survey of Canada , a canoe expedition, in 1894. Robert Monro Ferguson, a Scottish athlete and aide-de-camp of Lord Aberdeen , Governor General of Canada, took part in this expedition .

The lake and its drain were named after Ferguson.

geography

Ferguson Lake has an irregular contour, with many deep bays, long headlands, grassy bank slopes, terraces of sand and gravel, and rocky narrow passages.

There are several rock islands in the lake. These consist of gray-colored gneiss and dark green- colored diorite . There is an approximately 1 km long landing strip on a larger island.

East of the lake is a 180 m high prominent elevation, the Uligattalik Hill at ( 62 ° 55 ′ 38 ″  N , 96 ° 33 ′ 55 ″  W )

Ferguson Lake is located in the northern Hearne Domain , in the western Churchill province of the Churchill Craton , the northwestern part of the Canadian Shield .

flora

Dwarf birch ( Betula nana ), porst , lichen and moss make up the majority of the vegetation along the lake shore.

fauna

The cold temperate climate and the Barrenland Terrain form the habitat of the Barrenground caribou , grizzly bear , musk ox , arctic hare and arctic fox .

The anadromous arctic char belongs to the fish fauna of Ferguson Lake .

Natural resources

In 1953, copper - nickel deposits were discovered in the Ferguson Lake area. Further exploration in 1987 found cobalt , palladium and platinum .

Starfield Resources drilled at least four holes in 1999 to test an anomaly .

In 2004, further commercial drilling began on the east side of the lake. These are part of a large-scale project to extract sulfides , nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum and palladium.
