Jérôme Guillaume Fernand Sabatté (born May 14, 1874 in Aiguillon , † October 22, 1940 in Chamigny ) was a French history painter .

Life

After Fernand Sabatté's parents divorced in 1880, he moved to Bordeaux with his mother . After studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux with Émilien Piganeau , he continued his studies in 1893 at the École des beaux-arts de Paris with Gustave Moreau .

For the first time he exhibited his works in 1895 in the Salon des Artistes français . In 1900 he won the Grand Prix of Rome for his painting "A Spartan shows his sons a drunkard" and came into the French Academy in Rome . In October 1912 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor .

Mobilized during the First World War , he received the Croix de Guerre . In 1916 he dealt with the evacuation of the museum collections in northern France. He settled in Arras. In late 1920 he was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honor. Sabatté moved to Paris in the same year.

He taught painting from 1926 to 1929 at the École des beaux-arts de Lille, then from 1932 to 1940 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His students included u. a. Johan van der Bilt . In 1929 he founded the bimonthly magazine "L'Art". In 1935 he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts . He died in a car accident on October 22, 1940.
