Fernando García (composer)
Fernando García (born July 4, 1930 in Santiago de Chile ) is a Chilean composer .
From 1949 to 1960 García studied composition with Juan Orrego-Salas , Carlos Botto Vallarino and Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt and music analysis with Juan Allende-Blin in Santiago . In addition, he taught analysis, harmony, music history and theory at several conservatories in Santiago and at the Escuela Moderna de Música .
Until 1963 he was librarian of the choir of the Universidad de Chile , then until 1973 director and secretary of the Instituto de Extensión Musical (IEM). From 1973 to 1979 he lived in exile in Peru , where he taught at the Escuela Nacional de Música in Lima . He then worked as a musical advisor to the Ballet Nacional de Cuba and the Gran Teatro de La Habana .
In 1989 he returned to Chile, where he was titular professor at the Universidad de Chile in 1992 and vice director of the music journal Revista Musical Chilena , published by its art faculty in 1993 . He has been a member of the Colegio de Compositores Latinoamericanos de Música since 2002 and of the Academia Chilena de Bellas Artes del Instituto de Chile since 2004 . He was awarded the Premio Presidente de la República (2000) and the Medalla de la Música del Consejo Chileno de la Música (2002) for his life's work and the Medalla Rectoral de la Rectoría de la Universidad de Chile for his academic work .
García composed stage and orchestral works, chamber music , choral works, songs and piano pieces.
